D-I...Why you SHOULDN'T Clean your Own Drains!

We’ve all had that moment: You turn on the water in the sink or tub and see the water slowly creeping back up out of the deep dark drain. You remember the liquid drain cleaner under the sink and pull out the chemical infested liquid and pour it down the drain. Then poof! Problem solved, right? Wrong.

PIPE DAMAGE

The main problem drain cleaner companies won’t tell you is that their products can be harmful to your pipes—even if the bottle claims it’s “safe on pipes.” If you insist on trying a liquid-based solution to clear up clogs, choose an all-natural product. These products use natural enzymes to break up material clogging your pipes and will cause the least amount of damage.

DIY MONTHLY DRAIN MAINTENANCE

Here are some easy and inexpensive tips and tricks you can use monthly to keep your drains crystal clear.

First up, Hot water. Pour a large pot of very hot water down the drain you’re having issues with. Make sure the water is hot but not boiling. Then, follow with some cool water to flush out the clogs.

Another drain cleaner alternative is baking soda and vinegar. Pour half a cup of baking soda down your drain and chase it with half a cup of vinegar. Let the mixture sit overnight and in the morning flush the drains with hot water. They’ll work like they’re brand-new!
